You Can¡¦t Ignore The Child Abuse
Since 1987, The Taiwan Fund for Children and Families has focused on the task of protecting children through the formulation of policies for children's affairs. These support the growth and development of disadvantaged children and have since grown to involve more than 15,000 children who are victims of abuse. However, there are still thousands of children experiencing abuse from their families, schools, or other environments. The TFCF is addressing this issue by trying to understand the situation and why the abuse is happening.
In recent years, the TFCF has increased its attention on this situation in order to help find the support needed to save children from abuse.
Causes of Child Abuse on Children in General
- Physical Abuse¡GThe physical injury, such as hitting a child and burning a child with matches or cigarettes.
- Emotional Abuse¡GActs or omissions by the parents, such as inappropriate control, ignoring and belittling.
- Sexual Abuse¡GContacts and interaction between a child and an adult, such as rape, incest and sodomy.
- Child Neglect¡GFailure to provide for the child¡¦s basic needs, such as leaving a child unwatched.
Why are some parents abusing their children? Based on the TFCF children protection statistic report of 2007, it indicated that 61% of the abuse is a result of ¡§parental inexperience¡¨ and 40.4% is a result of an ¡§unbalanced marital status.¡¨ In addition, ineffective discipline, difficult behavior, poverty, unemployment, and alcoholism are frequently seen among abusers. This is especially the case due to the increasing percentage of poverty, unemployment, and alcoholism in society.
The effects of child abuse on victims are devastating and life-long, and its effects on our society are pervasive. Some signs that indicate child abuse are changes in a child's behavior or school performance, cuts and bruises, passive or withdrawn behavior, self-destructive or self-abusive behavior and suicidal thoughts. Abuse of children costs us all. Even a simple economic analysis demonstrates the enormous direct costs to society. These include medical care for injuries, mental health care and treatment for survivors and abusers, as well as criminal justice system and legal system costs.

Pay attention within your community for any family stress due to job loss, financial burdens, illness, death, separation, or divorce. Also note if children look under-nourished and/or dirty, or seems reluctant to go home. If you notice these signs of abuse, you should contact the National Child Protection Hot-line at 113. Assistants are available to deal with these difficult issues.

Be aware of signs of child abuse, such as feelings of sadness or other symptoms of depression, changes in a child¡¦s school performance, passive or withdrawn behavior, and financially disadvantaged students. Schools should also pay more attention to these signs of potential child abuse.
